Businesses and social media influencers rejoiced around the world on Wednesday when social media giant, Instagram, announced they were finally allowing business account users to schedule posts. The announcement comes after months of clients requesting the change, as scheduling apps would previously send out a notification to remind users it was time to post in order to keep in line with Instagram’s terms and conditions.
With the new update, businesses can use one of the app’s Facebook Marketing Partners or Instagram Partners to schedule posts in a set and forget style application. Over the past year, Instagram has slowly been integrating the Instagram Graph API into accounts (built from the Facebook version).
The biggest change is that, as with Facebook, social media managers now have the ability to schedule posts, eliminating the need to use your Android or iPhone at all. With the introduction of the new Instagram update, users will not only be able to schedule posts ahead of time, but will also have better account management due to the reduced need for login details being to be shared amongst employees. All scheduling can be performed through a desktop application such as Hootsuite, Sprout Social or SocialFlow.
However, for smaller businesses, this update may not be so beneficial. Not all small businesses will have the ability to pay for subscriptions to any of the affiliated Partners, meaning for now, the update only benefits big business who can afford the required subscriptions. Instagram is already a crucial way for small businesses to find new clients or advertise their products. This is partially due to changes in the way Facebook posting operates, which currently makes boosting a necessity for online exposure. It will be interesting to see how Instagram responds to this in the months to come.
